In summer, Fairbanks sits 140 miles south of the Arctic Circle and experiences up to 70 consecutive days of civil twilight — the sun does not set around the solstice, enabling 24-hour outdoor activities, festivals, and the famous Midnight Sun Baseball Game. In winter, Fairbanks lies directly beneath the auroral oval and logs more than 200 potential aurora-viewing nights per year thanks to its dry interior climate and minimal light pollution. March combines the highest geomagnetic activity (equinox effect funnels more solar wind poleward), long dark nights, and statistically clear skies — making it the single best month for aurora photography.
